, I
II

I

I

Greenwood Gulch enters the golf course at Quincy Avenue 400 feet west of

University Boulevard. At this point, flow is effectively obstructed by a

6-foot chain link fence reinforced on the downstream side by a closely

planted screen of short evergreen trees. The chain link mesh openings

will be quickly plugged with leaves, grass, brush, and other debris under

flood flow conditions and the resulting backwater will inundate University

Boulevard. Compounding the situation are 6-foot chain link fences on each

side of University Boulevard. Between the golf course fence and the Cherry

Hills City Hall, 500 feet east of University Boulevard, there are four

groups of culverts which are inadequate to carry 10-year or greater storm

runoff.

I

I

I

I

I

From the City Hall to Village Road the shallow, grassy, treeless waterway

is subject to wide flooding. There are four groups of culverts in the

reach at road or pathway crossings, and seven woven wire fences which will

intercept debris. Blackmer Gulch enters Greenwood Gulch at Village Road.

I

I

Some 400 feet upstream from Village Road the channel is again obstructed by

two 6-foot chain link fences. From this point 5,600 feet upstream Greenwood

Gulch passes through a waterfowl sanctuary containing the following fea-

tures: two small ponds, one pedestrian bridge, three culverts, three breached

dikes, seven woven wire fences about 42-inches high, and about 4,800 feet of

channel clogged with dense cattail growth. No homes have been built close

to the channel in this reach, except near Belleview Avenue.

I

I

I

I

Greenwood Gulch in Greenwood Village. The Highline Canal traverses the side
slopes of Greenwood Gulch forming a 4,000-foot long loop in Greenwood Vil-
lage. In the lower half of this loop three private ponds ringed by cattails
have been formed by the erection of low embankments. A dense growth of cat-

I

tails extends from the lowest pond to Belleview Avenue. The flood plain in

the loop is grazed by livestock and some of the area is planted in alfalfa.

At the bend of the loop the Highline Canal intercepts all small storm run-

off from Prentice Gulch and Greenwood Gulch, which enter the canal only 300

feet apart.

I

I

I

-22-

I
