16. Precipitation . Snowfall. . Snowfall is general over the
Huerfano basin from October to April and remains on the ground thr ughout
the year at some points in tho hiGher altitudes of the headwaters. The
snowfall is heavy in. the mountainous regions and decreases in amomt
toward the mouth of the river. The average annual snowfall at typ eal
stations within and near the basin is given in Table No. 5.

17. Precinitat.iol1 - Storms. - The principal flood producing s arms
over the watershed are of the cloudburst type which are of short du ation
and COver relatively small areas. General rains are infrequent and
ordinarily do not result in floods. The cloudburst type of storm i
caused by large volumes of moisture-laden air from the plains being
deflected upward by the eastern frontal range of the Rocky Mountain to
an altitude at which the reduction of temperature causes rapid cond( nsation,
