The Secretary of War is hereby authorized and <br />directed to cause preliminary examinations and surveys for <br />flood. control at the folloVling named localities * ljo. * <br />Huerfano River, Colo~ado. * u *11 <br /> <br />A preliminary examination report on the Cuchara and Huerfano Rive s, <br /> <br />Colorado, dated December 30, 1937, was submitted by the District gineer, <br /> <br />Little Rock District, and reviewed by the Board of Engineers for vers. <br /> <br />and Harbors. A st~vey of the Huerfano Riv~r Was authorized by the Chtef <br /> <br /> <br />of Engineers on March 21, 1935. <br /> <br /> <br />2. Prior Renorte. - The only prior report on this river perthin!ng <br /> <br />to flood control is the preliminary examination report referred to in <br /> <br />paragraph 1; however, brief mention of the stream is made in the rFP&rt, <br />"Arkansas River and Tributaties", published as House Document No. hos, <br />, <br />Seventy-fourth Oongress, First Session.. t' ' <br />.3. DescriDtion of the 71atershed. - The Hilerfano River waters ed' <br />lies wholly within Southeastern Colorado. and extends from the East rn <br />frontal range of tbe Rocky Mountains generally eastward and northe~st- <br />ward across the foothills and the ~estern part of the Gre~t Plains~ It <br /> <br /> <br />is an irregular-shaped area approximately 85 miles in lengthma,.nldes~r1 miles <br /> <br />in greatest width, and oomprises approximately 1,360 square .
