<br />Fleeting, brutal storm
<br />causes lasting damage in
<br />Elbert County
<br />

<br />July 18, 2000 - A short but brutal storm
<br />hammered Elbert County on Monday afternoon,
<br />washing out several roads and flooding basements
<br />in many homes in the rural area southeast of
<br />Denver,
<br />
<br />The rain forced the closure of County Road 13, after
<br />the rushing water washed away a 15-foot segment
<br />of the road after filling the empty Whiskey Gulch.
<br />The running water

<br />mud into four
<br />huge culverts,
<br />sending water
<br />onto the road, The
<br />rain, mixed with
<br />hail, lasted only
<br />about 30 minutes,
<br />But it did plenty of
<br />damage,
<br />

<br />"This spot has long been a problem," said Sgt.
<br />James Taunton of the Elbert County Sheriff's
<br />Department, The rain began about 3:30 p,m., just
<br />before commuters from Denver were heading back
<br />to Parker and Elbert County, In all, about 3 1/2
<br />inches of rain fell within an hour. Bill Wilcox, who
<br />has lived in that part of Elbert County for 16 years,
<br />blames floods such as the one on Monday on rapid
<br />growth in the area,
<br />
<br />"That always used to flood when we would get a
<br />heavy rain, but the grasses upstream used to soak
<br />it in," Wilcox said, "Now, with all the houses up
<br />there, the water doesn't soak in anymore," Dennis
<br />Gesin, owner of Smokey Jack's BBQue in Elizabeth,
<br />was amazed at how quickly the rains flooded the
<br />area.

<br />"The sun's shining right now," Gesin said with a
<br />laugh a few hours after the rains hit. "But we had a

<br />who were injured by

<br />treated for minor
<br />burns to their legs
<br />and released from
<br />Exempla Lutheran
<br />Medical Center in
<br />Wheat Ridge on
<br />Monday.

<br />The victims, whose
<br />names were not
<br />released, were
<br />injured by lightning
<br />about 8 p.m.
<br />Sunday while
<br />camping near Mount
<br />Evans. The lightning
<br />either struck them
<br />directly or was close
<br />by I according to the
<br />Clear Creek County
<br />Sheriff's
<br />Department.
<br />
<br />Because of the
<br />stormy weather f the
<br />victims stayed at
<br />their camp
<br />overnight, police
<br />said, In the
<br />morning, they hiked
<br />out to their vehicle
<br />and drove to Echo
<br />lake Lodge, where
<br />they called for an
<br />ambulance.
<br />
<br />The victims, both
<br />23, are from the
<br />Denver area.
