.;;{'>!:

in

Floods of June 1965

South Platte River Basin - Colorado and Nebraska

Torrential rains June 14 to 17, caused floods in the South Platte River

basin in eastern Colorado. The attached tabulation contains provisional re-

sults of indirect measurements of peak discharge and a few peak discharges

determined from stage-discharge relations defined by current-meter mea-

surements. All of these are subject to revision after additional studies are

made, particularly on streams where measurements were obtained at more

than one location. All streams and sites that were investigated are shown

in the tabulation, whether or not computations were complete. Field sur-

veys are completed, and values of peak discharges will be available for all

stations listed. In addition to the data tabulated, much other information,

such as stream cross sections and water-surface profiles, is available for

inspection at the district office, Surface Water Branch of the Geological

Survey at 1455 Ammons Street, Denver, Colo.

A complete report concerning the floods in the South Platte River basin

in Colorado and in western Nebraska will be published when all computations

are complete.

The summer floods in eastern Colorado, were major hydrologic events.

Many previous maxima were exceeded, some several fold. In many in-

stances, alterations of the stream valleys by erosion were greater than any
