"LATS
PwoNT
U.S.A.CC.

I

@

N
...

The most prominent geographic feature within the Basin is Sloans Lake,

History relates that the lake was formed in about 1866 when a homeste"der,

Thomas M, Sloan, during the process of dri II ing a well to obtain i rritl"-

tion water, struck an underground spring which flooded the v"lley on his

farm and covered what later was reported to be a Indian pony race track

and stage coach road. Since that time, the lake, which now occupies

176.5 acres of a 290 acre Denver park, has been and continues to be a

valuable recreational resource for the rnetropol itan area. In addition

to its scenic and recreational significance, the lake provides the very

important function of regulating and control I ing dmvnstrealll fJOIvs that

otherwise would be allowed to run uninhibl ted through west Denver.

TO .."ofCCL'....

-------._~-" ""

AaCKY "'OUNT"'" "AS""AI-

I

I

I

. . ~
.

I

.

Since the Basin Is heavily urbanized, the major drainageways are not

clearly identifiable, Most of the major historic drainage channels have

either been filled In or built over to the point of obliteration. Where

open drainageways do appear, vegetation Is usually well controlled and

reflects the completely urbanized nature of the overall Bas in. Soi I con-

ditions tested In the vicinity of Sloans Lake revealed that the material

above the existing water table, measured to be between 7 and 11 feet below

ground level, was fairly sandy and granular. 5011 below the local water

table was a heavy clay with a classification of A-6(lO) in the AASHO

standards.

-.-

ADAMS COUI
.wa..
