Doesken and Thomas B. McKee
Atmospheric Science Department
Colorado State University

Up to twelve inches of zain in a few hours produced the devastating Big Thompson Canyon
flood of 1976. Historic information for Colorado show that storms of this magnitude have
occurred from time to time but only from the plains westward into the eastern foothills of the
Rockies. Spatial, seasonal, and elevational characteristics of Colorado's heaviest precipitation
events will be described based on observations since the late 1800s. Despite the great
importance of accurate measurement and documentation of storm precipitation, maximum zainfall
amounts from many of the largest reported storms in Colorado remain in doubt.

2
