<br />The hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for this study were per- <br />formed by the u.s. Army Corps of Engineers, Albuquerque District, <br />as reported in Special Flood Hazard Information, Arkansas River, <br />Anderson and King Arroyosr La Junta, Otero County, Colorado <br />(Reference 1) and by MSM Consultants for the Colorado Water <br />Conservation Board and Otero County, as reported in Floodplain <br />Information Report, Arkansas River, Timpas Creek, Otero County, <br />Colorado (Reference 2). <br /> <br />Additional data were taken from the Flood Insurance Study for the <br />City of La Junta, Otero County, Colorado (Reference 3). <br /> <br />1.3 Coordination <br /> <br />As a result of correspondence between the regional office of FEMA <br />and FEMA Headquarters, it was requested that the Technical Evalua- <br />tion Contractorr Dames & Moorer prepare a Flood Insurance Study <br />for Otero County. <br /> <br />2.0 AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study covers the unincorporated areas of <br />Otero County, Colorado. The area of study is shown on the <br />Vicinity Map (Figure 1). <br /> <br />The areas studied by detailed methods were selected based on the <br />extent and validity of available hydrologic and hydraulic data. <br /> <br />Streams studied by detailed methods are shown in Table 1. <br /> <br />Approximate analyses were used to study those areas having a low <br />development potential or minimal flood hazards. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />Otero County is located in southeastern Colorado. Adjacent coun- <br />ties are Crowley County on the northr Kiowa County on the north- <br />east, Bent County on the eastr Las Animas County on the south, and <br />Pueblo County on the west. Incorporated communities within the <br />county are the Cities of La Junta and Rocky Ford, and the Towns of <br />Fowlerr Manzanolar Swinkr and Cheraw. According to the u.S. Bureau <br />of the Census, the 1980 population of Otero County was 22,567. <br /> <br />The Arkansas River originates in the high mountains along the Con- <br />tinental Divide near Leadville, Colorado. Between Leadville and <br />Canon City, it is a typical mountain stream, descending more than <br />6,000 feet in approximately 130 milesr at gradients often exceeding <br />50 feet per mile. <br /> <br />2 <br />
