In recent years, the South Suburban Metro Park and Recreation District constructed a trail
along Lee Gulch from Clarkson Street and County Line Road to Ridgewood Park in
Littleton, through a variety of south suburban neighborhoods. At Ridgewood Park, the
South Suburban Park Foundation project begins. Our plans call for thirty car parking lot
here.

MM,.. 1etJ.je

~

The Lee Gulch Trail Extension will bring the trail from Ridgewood Park to. the Platte
River. The trail will ramp down under the Santa Fe railroad bridge to provide the only
below-grade, separated pedestrian crossing of Santa Fe Drive, one of Littleton's busiest
streets. The importance of this below grade crossing can not be underestimated! This will
be the safest pedestrian/bicycle access to the Platte River, South Platte Park, the Brown
Ditch Boat Chutes and the Riverfront Festival Center in all of south suburban Denver.

Once on the west side of Santa Fe Drive, cottonwoods and a variety of riparian shrubbery
line the creek bed, providing a lush habitat for wildlife. The trail will wind unobtrusively
through this especially lovely and increasingly rare micro-environment. The Lee Gulch
Trail will meet the Arapahoe Greenway and the Platte River at Oxbow Pond.

Oxbow Pond was created in 1987 when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers realigned the
Platte.River for flood control. Fishery experts from the Colorado Division of Wildlife
indicate that with minimal dredging and construction of a small waterfall/drop structure,
the pond will support a permanent population of warm water fish. A private contractor
has already offered to donate dredging services!

Oxbow Pond Park will become an important node in the string of outdoor recreational
amenities along the Platte River. It will function as a rest area for hikers and bicyclists
along the Lee Gulch Trail and the Arapahoe Greenway, with benches, picnic tables and
. 'bike racks and a shady gazebo. A fiShing dock built especially for the handicapped will be
a unique feature of Oxbow Pond Park. Once complete, the Lee Gulch Trail Connection
and Oxford Pond Park will be maintained by the South Suburban Metro Recreation and
Park District.

.

Please join the South Suburban Park Foundation as we strive to make south suburban
Denver a wonderful place to work and to play. Contribute today. Your donation will help
to keep our local environment healthy, beautiful and safe for generations to come.

.
