magnitude of flow for that flood is no= availab:e. Flood
losses in the study area usua:ly consisted of d2~maqe to
bridges and irrigation structures. In a numbey of flood
years, flood fighting was required to protect residential
and commercial areas from rising water.

2.3 Stream Hydrolocrv and Hydra~~~ics

To determine peak flows of 'che 1 DO-year flooc, the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers made a flow-freauency analysis
of flows recorded at the "below Rico" and "at Dolores"
stream gaging stations on the Dolores River1 according to
guidelines established by the U.S. Water Resources Counci:.
Snowmelt floods and rain floods 'at the Dolores clage were
separated and statistically analyzed to determirle the type
of event that would cause the larger, less freqllent floods.
This type of analysis was not made for the Rico gage ~ecause
the period of record is too short~

Unit hydrographs for the Dolores River were developed by
the Snyder, s-curve, and optimization techniquesir and were
based on the flows of the September 1970 flood at the Rico
and Dolores gages. Loss rates developed for this study were
compared to and found basically the same as those from
earlier studies made by the the Los Angeles Dist:rict of the
Corps of Engineers and the u.s. Bureau of Re=lan\stion.

Peak flow-frequency values found for t~e 1(:-, 50-,
100-, and SOG-year ~~oo6s a~ selec~ed ~ndex po:rl~S a=e
-;:abulated belo,,'.

1 Periods of recora:
1896-1903, 1911-12,

1914-15, ana 1952-present, Rico gage;

and 1992-present, Dolores gage.

-4-
