Thoa.u IPt al. 1979)

A riparian ecosystem receives input frolD both upstream and
surrounding watershed and may deliver the input downstr,~am, sometimes in
altered form. Seed and nutrient input is th,~refore an Important
water-borne link between upstream (upland) ecosystems, lllld riparian
ecosystems. Likewise, riparian ecosystems m'IY serve as seed sources for
downstream ecosystems and may alter nutrient inputs as ,.ell, exporting them
in a more reduced form. Most of the flow of energy and nutrients seems to
be water-borne, but animals may provide significant linkages with
surrounding ecosystems as well. Net energy !flows assodated with animal
populations seem to be from upland to wetland ecosystemll and from wetland
to aquatic ecosystems.
