Detailed hydrologic analysis will generally provide more accurate results
because it incorporates site specific basin characteristics. It is the recommended approach where
time and budget allow. Analysis using the regional regression equation approach of Equation 1
offers fast estimates of discharge rates but can only be used to determine 100-year flows and
could potentially have larger margins for error. Table 3 presents discharge rates for key points
on approximately studied streams within Pitkin county computed using the CWCB regional
regression equation approach.

Reservoirs. Reservoirs exist on two approximately mapped stream systems within Pitkin
County. The largest of these is Ruedi Reservoir on the Fryingpan River along the northern
boundary of the county. Ruedi Reservoir is a water supply facility which has a total capacity of
102,369 ac-ft but no dedicated flood storage capacity. Because of this, the U.S. Bureau of
Reclamation (USBR), which is responsible for operation of the reservoir, has recommended that
no credit for reductions in flood flow be taken for the reservoir. The 100-year discharge value
presented in Table 3 for the approximately studied reach of the Fryingpan River immediately
downstream of the reservoir has been computed using the CWCB regional regression equation
for the Upper Colorado River Subregion (Equation 1). In accordance with USBR
recommendations, the computed discharge does not include any reduction in flows by Ruedi
Reservoir.

Grizzly Reservoir is a small water supply facility located on Lincoln Creek. Grizzly Reservoir is
owned by the Twin Lakes Reservoir and Canal Company and has no dedicated flood storage
space. No credit for potential storage of flood flows should be taken for this reservoir.
Discharges for the approximately mapped reaches of Lincoln Creek downstream of Grizzly
Reservoir may be computed using the CWCB regional regression equation for the Upper
Colorado River Subregion (Equation 1).

7
