.~

The floodplain has a number of natural and man-made
obstructions to ftreamflow including trees, brush, gravelbars and
various other st;:uctures. Without stabilization structures or
natural streamba~k armament, the river will continue to migrate
in a northerly drection toward the Town of Crook.

Following tl,,,, 1973 flood, the State of Colorado recognized
the flooding problems and needs of the community and provided
assistance thro~ n the Division of Wildlife. The Division
assisted local oZicials with the construction of a number of
deflector dikes (jetties) to control stream migration during high
flows.

These jettiEI were placed to provide protection to lands
located in the l~:t overbank (North) and right overbank(South).
Due to high erosi~e flows over recent years the North jetties
have been severe:',J eroded and are in poor condition. The
South-Side jettiE,3 have been re-conditioned and have been armored
with stone rip r2? in 1984.

The Colorado Department of Highways is presently designing
new bridge cross.~ngs for State Highway 55. This proposed
re-construction c :fers an opportunity to incorporate flood
mitigation measu~~s into the design.

Historical ~~ood peak discharges
at Julesburg, Co"orado, are:

for the South Platte River

Date

Discharge
(C.P.s. )

'.

Ju, 6 1904
JUi: 11, 1905
Jl:!'. \5, 1909
Ma':: 11, 1910
Ju:: 8, 1814
Ju " 1 , 1917
Ju: 16, 1921
Jun 18, 1923
JU7; 10, 1924
Ju~ 2, 1935
Sep 10, 1938

6,500
12,400
6,040
18,800
13,400
9,100
30,800
16,000
11,000
31,300
7,980

-3-
