<br />. . <br /> <br />~ ~~ <br /> <br />PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF REPORT <br /> <br />The purpose of this report is to present the findings of a <br />reconnaissance investigation regarding the development of viable <br />mitigatiln measures to lessen the erosion and flooding problems <br />along th" South Platte River at Crook, Colorado, and surrounding <br />areas. 2he report will describe and illustrate protective <br />measures for the study reach including costs and benefits. The <br />investig,tions, findings, and recommendations are intended to aid <br />the Town of Crook and Logan County in obtaining financial <br />assistac~e to develop and implement a plan-of-improvement which <br />will mit~gate economic losses from floods. <br /> <br />LIMITS C" STUDY <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />The study reach for this investigation and report begins <br />at State Highway No, 55, thence extending upstream to the <br />Colorado Division of Wildlife's Souths ide Dike, a total distance <br />of apprc ,imately'two and one-half miles, <br /> <br />DESCRIPT:ON OF THE STUDY AREA <br /> <br />CrcJk is located in Northeastern Colorado and is 28 miles <br />northeas: of Sterling. The town lies within the floodplain of <br />the Soute' Platte River. The basic economic structure of the town <br />is that .' f a typical small agr icul tural community. The <br />communitj is surrounded by thousands of acres of irrigated <br />croplanc and ranchland. Flood-related problems from the South <br />Platte ~~ver have adversely impacted the economy of the area. <br /> <br />:. <br /> <br />Ma~ c'r transportat ion systems wh ich serve the area are U, S, <br />Highway ;38, Interstate 76, State Highway 55 and Union Pacific <br />Railroac:, The embankments and bridges of these traffic systems <br />are fact,:',rs in determining flow reg imes of floodwater. The <br />Coloradc Division of Wildlife owns and operates the Tamarack <br />State WLdlife Area. The development within the Wildlife ,Area <br />includes fencing, wood and herbaceous plants, heavy growth of <br />grasses, trees and underbrush for wildlife. Water development <br />activit!.es include construction of flow deflection dikes and dams <br />to form 3mall ponds for wildlife watering. <br /> <br />'~o 1 <br />crook <br />
