<br />PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF REPORT <br />, <br /> <br />The purpose of this report is to present the findings of a <br />reconnaissance investigation regarding the development of viable <br />structural measures to lessen the erosion and flooding problems <br />along the Uncompahgre River at Olathe and surrounding areas. The <br />report will describe and illustrate protective measure for the <br />study reach including associated costs and benefits. The report <br />findings are intended to aid the town in obtaining financial <br />assistance to develop and implement a plan-of-improvement. <br /> <br />GIMITS OF STUDY <br /> <br />The study reach for this report extends from the towns' <br />waste water lagoons, thence extending upstream to the point <br />approximately one-half mile upstream of Church Avenue a total <br />distance of two miles. <br /> <br />DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY AREA <br /> <br />Olathe is located on the western slope of ColoJ~ado along <br />U.S. Highway 50 between Delta and Montrose. The basic structure <br />of the town follows that of the typical western community. The <br />community is surrounded by thousands of acres of irrigated <br />cropland, fruit orchards, and ranchland. Primarily, the town <br />provides goods and services and housing for the agricultural <br />area. The Uncompahgre River impacts the communit.y on its <br />southern, western and northern boundaries. <br /> <br />The Ute Indians occupied the Valley for hundred years prior <br />to its settlement by the Spanish. The Uncompahgre River, which <br />means "muddy river," was named such by the Indians because of its <br />reddish-muddy color. <br /> <br />-2- <br />
