PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF REPORT
,

The purpose of this report is to present the findings of a
reconnaissance investigation regarding the development of viable
structural measures to lessen the erosion and flooding problems
along the Uncompahgre River at Olathe and surrounding areas. The
report will describe and illustrate protective measure for the
study reach including associated costs and benefits. The report
findings are intended to aid the town in obtaining financial
assistance to develop and implement a plan-of-improvement.

GIMITS OF STUDY

The study reach for this report extends from the towns'
waste water lagoons, thence extending upstream to the point
approximately one-half mile upstream of Church Avenue a total
distance of two miles.

DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY AREA

Olathe is located on the western slope of ColoJ~ado along
U.S. Highway 50 between Delta and Montrose. The basic structure
of the town follows that of the typical western community. The
community is surrounded by thousands of acres of irrigated
cropland, fruit orchards, and ranchland. Primarily, the town
provides goods and services and housing for the agricultural
area. The Uncompahgre River impacts the communit.y on its
southern, western and northern boundaries.

The Ute Indians occupied the Valley for hundred years prior
to its settlement by the Spanish. The Uncompahgre River, which
means "muddy river," was named such by the Indians because of its
reddish-muddy color.

-2-
