The crossing ~ay be improved and new support piers installed.
Between Arkansas Ave. and Navajo St., the channel passes through
two blocks of land owned by the Denver Parks Department. This
area should be developed by the Parks Department in compliance
with the master plan concept. Mariposa St. presently crosses
the channel on a small wooden bridge in the center of this area.
The master plan indicates the vacation of Mariposa St. From
Navajo St. to Arkansas Ave., the channel crosses private property
and right-of-way must be acquired. A strip of land adjacent to
Quivas St. is presently in the ownership of Public Service Co.
and can be considered as semi-public ownership.

Plorida intersection although no damage to property is expected.
Developm0nt of the park lands cast of Zuni St. should include
the removal and regrading of the existing high point which causes
significant flooding in the zuni - Florida intersection.

~le channel between Zuni and Clay St. is a standard grasslined
channel with 3:1 side slopes. portions of the right-of-way must
be acquired while others are in public ownership.

The Arkansas Ave. crossing is an extremely important improvement
since the baCkwater from Arkansas Ave. presently inundates houses
situated along Florida Ave. Under existing conditions of devel-
opment and with the present culvert beneath Arkansas Ave., several
houses adjacent to Florida Ave. are situated in the 10 year storm
flood plain. The potential damage to homes in the area justifies
major improvements to the Arkansas Ave. crossing. The proposed
improvements consist of installing a new culvert paralleling the
existing conduit and lowering the grdue of Arkansas Ave. approxi-
mately 2 feet. These improvements remove all residents along
Florida Ave. fram the 10 year flood plain, although three or
four homes would still be slightly inundated by the 100 year
storm.

The Clay St. crossing shall be left in place and street over-
topping allowed. Little or no property damage will result from
the overtopping of Clay St.

Extreme channel encroachment exists between clay St. and Federal
Blvd. One residence must be acquired immediately west of Clay
St. to allow the construction of a steep walled channel. Adjacent
to Federal Blvd., an extremely narrow section again exists where
a steep walled channel, using gabion encased riprap, is recom-
mended.

Drawinq No. S-2

Drawing No. S-4
The existing Federal Blvd. culvert shall be utili~ed and excess
flows allowed to flow across the surface of Federal. It is
recommended that flood proofing measures be initiated on two
apartment house complexes on the east side of Federal Blvd. A
severe local drainage problem exists on Federal Blvd. and can
only be solved by the installation of storm sewer in Federal
Blvd. north of the gulch.
Between Federal Blvd. and Irving St., the gulch flows through
an area presently under development by the Denver Park Dept. The
channel cross section utili~ed through this r.,,,c!l is ildequate
and no improvements other thiill trIOS'" cUllLci\ll-'l..t",d ,-y thO! ?arks
Department are necessary.

Between Arkansas AVe. and Florida Ave., the cnQnnel flows throu~h
an area of partial private and partial public ownership. Ade-
quate space is available to acquire a right-of-way for a Channel
with 4:1 side slopes. In some areas near Florida Ave. existing
channel banks are steep and constricted by back yards so that side
slopes up to 2,1 w~ll be necessary.

The Florida Ave. crossing shall be left in place and adjacent
areas flood plain ~oned. Flooding from a 10 year storm will be
limited to undeveloped areas with little or no property dili~age.
During 100 year storms, some property damage would be expected.

~he Irving St. crossing shall
crossing the street surface.
to the flow across the street

be left in place with
No property damage is
surface.

excess flows
expected due

Drawing No. 5-3
The damage potential due to flooding near Zuni St. justifies the
installation of a new conduit dt this location. The proposed con-
duit will pass a 10 year storm without flooding adjacent proper-
ties. considerdble flooding would still occur at the Zu~i anc

West of trving St. the channel flows through a strip park devel-
opment completed by the Denver Parks Department. The only
improvements necessary through this reach are installation of
check dams to control the velocity ot flow and removal of exist-
ing pedestrian bridges. The removal of the pedestrian bridge,. is
recommended to eliminate the possibility of them being swept
downstream during periods of flooding to plug downstream culverts.
The construction of the Check dams could be such that they would
take the place of the existing pedestrian bridge.

West of the Florida Ave. crossing, the ch~nnel passes through an
area of park ownership. The channel should be improved as indica-
ted on the master plan by the Parks Department along with develop-
ment of the park.

-"4-

-95-
