.

I

Scnday, October 1, 2000

GREELEY (Cola) TRI8U~IE C5

I New disc aims to teach I
students about water

Greeley firm, conservation board work on school project

BY BILL JACKSON
Greeley Tnbune

.

An interactive computer disc about water with in-
struction aimed at elementary and high schcol students
has been developed by a Greeley company for distrib-
ution statewide.
Agtown.com conceived the Colorado W;:lter Educa-
(ion~l Resource Guide through funding under the Col-
orado Water Conservation Board's mission to promme
Water educmion.
It is being distributed free to teachers throughout the
state.
Emmett Jordan. senior product analyst with Ag-
town.com, said Tom C:::ch of[h~ C:::-uraJ Colorado \Va-
rer Conservancy District. headquartered ill Greeley,
designed the progrJ1TI and was responsible for the de-
velopment of the curricula, Lori Ozello of the Nonh-
ern Colorado Water Conservancy District in Loveland
provided additional content.
C~eh said that while the CD is directed at founh-
through sixth-grade teachers. it is applicable for
preschool through the 12th grade and the general pub~
lie as well.
"We've got so many people moving intO this area
that have no idea this is an arid region," Cech said.
Those people have little information on where their
water comes from and what it has taken to develop wa-

ter resources, he Jdded. rhe CD, in part. addresses (hat
area.
The CD is pan of a 5115,000 water education pro-
gram approved earlier this year by the Colorado Leg.
isiarure that is being directed by the Colorado Water
Conservation Board with assismnce through the Col-
orado Water Congress. Cech, who is executive direc-
tor of the Central Colorado district. is chairman of the
education comrnitree of the Colorado Water Conser-
varion Board.
Cech said Agtown.com's developmenr of the CD
was a narural. That company is owned by Clair Orr, a
Kersey rancher who is also a member of [he Colorado
Su[e n0ard of Education.
"Clair, Emmetl and Lori ,really had a large part in
developing the curricula. What this does is put water
education under one umbrella. but that doesn't mean
the conservation board has complete control of that ed-
uCa(ion." Cech said.
Jordan said the CD has several resources available
to not only teachers but others involved in water edu-
cation.
"If someone in Durango, for instance, wants to e-
mail someone about water, mere will be someone lo-
cally who can respond to that e-mail and provide
;:mswers' for vou," he said. "This 9:ives teachers re-
sources to help them bring: water information into [heir
classrooms. ..

"
"

.
