Walchet
Executive Director

Colorado Water Conservation Board Members
Dan McAuliffe
March 16,2001
Agenda Item #11 - Joint Water Quality Meeting Follow-up

~

Rod Kuharich
Director

Dan McAnliffe
Deputy Director

On Feb. 14 most Board members attended a water quality workshop in Denver that was
hosted by the Department of Natural Resources and the Colorado Department of Public Health
and Environment. The participating agencies included:

Water Conservation Board
Water Quality Control Commission
Agriculture Commission .
Wildlife Commission
Water Resources and Power Development Authority Board
Great Outdoors Colorado Board
State Parks Board
Ground Water Commission

The workshop was not designed to resolve any of the major crosscutting issues
addressed. The principal goals of the workshop were to: (1) to provide a better understanding
among Board and Commission members and staff of the principal roles and responsibilities of
the respective agencies; and (2) to improve opportunities for coordination and cooperation
among the agencies. We are in the process of completing an informal record of the workshop for
your information.

To take advantage of opportunities created by the workshop, Paul Frohardt, the
Administrator of the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission, will be attending our
meeting. According to statute (25-8-104 C.R.S.), the Commission consults with the State
Engineer and the CWCB before making any decision or adopting any rule or policy which has
the potential to cause material injury to water rights. We currently meet with representatives
from the Commission and the Water Quality Control Division quarterly. The next meeting is
scheduled for April 10. Consultations on specific matters happen more frequently as appropriate
and necessary.
