do we go through all this hogwash? Well, the
main reason is that we are interested in veg~
etation. Vegetation reflects light out in
infrared bands and in some cases we can tell
a lot about vegetation by looking for this red
color on this infrared film.

An example being Lake George on the South
Platte River (slide). This being in October,
some of the vegetation was gone, but you see
the pink colors coming up here along the edge
showing the vegetation that is in good growth
status. You also see a couple of pink lawns
in this area showing that apparently these
houses are occupied this time of the year and
that they are irrigating their lawns. The ones
that have the lawns that aren't pink have
probably allowed their lawns to dry up late in
the summer.

You see the patterns in the lake showing up
in the blue colors or in tones of blue. This
gives us an indication of bottom characteristics
of the lake and vegetation growing on the bottom
of Lake George.

Coming in over Denver (these are not in the
order in which they were taken) we see Barr
Lake. (slide) Another example of the color in-
. frared is this field over here which is an
alfalfa field which the man right here is mowing.
By the way, this is a Sunday afternoon. The
field where the alfalfa is standing with the
leaves facing up is in here. You can see that
apparently he has an area of hardpan or of
wilted alfalfa where it shows up a light color
in his alfalfa patch. In this area around the
outside where he has cut the alfalfa it has
dropped over and almost immediately the plants
start to wilt.

You will also see the red or the pink
color showing up out in Barr Lake, and if you
have ever been up to the shore of Barr Lake,
you will know why you are seeing the pink color.

-44-

I

I
