you will find dozens of theses on the biology
of the waters of the state or on various
characteristics of water management. Colorado
State University, the University of Colorado
are the biggest. A few months ago I talked I
with a professor at Southern Colorado State
College who has put together data on some 400
lakes of the state.

So the interest is allover. There are
included special groups such as the water and
sanitary district around Grand Lake, Granby and
Shadow Mountain. There are private interests -
the Homestake Company, different mining interests,
irrigation companies. and if you want to put
another one in here. you can throw in Tim Kelly
too. who publishes the Hunting and Fishing
Guide for Colorado and Wyoming.

I represent the Geological Survey. Our
interest in lakes is much the same as our
interest in ground water or in the streams of
the state. That is, in that we are interested
in providing information on the lakes and par-
ticularly in the information that can be used
for their better management. We know there are
problems in these lakes and I'll put some
pictures on the board that will show you some
examples. You already saw the condition of the
Russell Lakes.

We know that in many cases. lakes must be.
they will be. subject to more management. In
other words. their levels will be more care-
fully controlled. There probably will be bio-
logical management practices and there will be
different things to consider in the planning
and construction of the lakes. So. as I said.
our role in the whole thing is that we want to
provide information on the lakes. This is Why
I. for example, have gone around and talked to
a number of people trying to find out who knows
what and what we can learn.

I

-42-
