uv~....

I

administered under the Department of Civil
Engineering. However, we do have faculty mem-
bers in other departments that are working in
the area of ground water. For example, we have
Dr. Waltz in the Department of Geology, Dr.
Samuel Morrison in the Department of Microbiology,
Dr. Pember in the Department of Agronomy, as well
as myself and Dr. H. Morel-Seytoux in the Depart-
ment of civil Engineering. So we are not just a
civil Engineering group but a group of people
working in different areas. We tend to comple-
ment each other to solve ground water problems
in the state as well as on a national basis.

I have been called upon to give you a
presentation of the past, present and future
research that has been conducted here at Colo-
rado State University. Some of the research
has been along the theoretical and developmental
lines and some of the research has been in test-
ing with field conditions the results of our
theoretical and technological developments.
For example, we have developed techniques for
estimating areal recharge to a given aquifer.
In Qrder to test the validity of our development,
we used the Ogallala formation as a field exam-
ple. We have a report out Which is in the form
of a Master's thesis and it is entitled 'Distri-
bution of Ground Water Recharge'. This report
describes the areal distribution of recharge to
the Ogallala formation in northeastern Colorado.

I

Another project that we have worked on is
water quality, again in conjunction with Dr.
Morrison of the Microbiology Department, and
we have a report out on ground water quality in
the Severance Basin. This basin is located
about 14 miles east of Fort Collins. In this
we have developed techniques for analyzing
ground water quality problems and we have
applied these techniques to actual field situa-
tions to show that these techniques are indeed
applicable and can be used on a practical basis.

We have developed a numerical model which
utilizes our CDC6400 computer for predicting
