,..1.-..1.-.....

false impression that all of the secondary
plants in today are operating adequately.

We recently ran a study at Greeley and
found out that the plant is adequately sized
but it just wasn't being operated properly. I.~.
We are presently working with Fort Collins on
the same situation. Denver Metro will have
to enlarge. I think in their original plans
they estimated it would be 1982 before they
would need to enlarge. They have added areas
on that they hadn't anticipated. Thornton,
Northglenn and Aurora weren't included in
the original plans. All of these have been
added on and they are going to have to en-
large sooner. We expect plans from them
around Mayor June this year. Colorado Springs
is in the process of enlarging.

We will have to keep tabs on the secondary
plants. Just getting them built isn't going
to be the answer.

Another way of putting it, out of our
estimated population of, I think, 2.2 million,
95 percent of our population is on some type
of a municipal sewer. Of those on a municipal
sewer, 99.3 percent have secondary treatment
based on population connections. I think this
compares favorably with some of the best situ-
ations in the nation. I beiieve New Mexico
is the only one that I know of that has 100
percent on secondary treatment at present.

With regard to stream sampling stations,
as you probably read in the papers, last
month it was reported to a Senate committee
that 30 of 134 classified areas were found
not to be in compliance. As you might sus-
pect, the worst situation was in the South I
Platte River basin. We have here our greatest
industry, our greatest population and not very
much water. With these three things combined -
you can expect it and it is true. It is
probably attributable to the feedlots that
