J~~~

This is a picture of the project area
(pointing) in southeastern Colorado; this being
the Continental Divide extending from north to
south with Denver located here; the Arkansas
River flowing to the east out of the state in
that direction; the upper tributaries of the
Colorado River on the west slope here, flowing
dm~nstream; the Fryingpan River meeting the
Colorado at Glenwood and on out of the state
at the west.

I

Ruedi Reservoir is the most westerly
feature and is constructed for the purpose of
providing replacement storage. The repacement
storage assures that those downstream rights
will not be interfered with at such times as
diversions are being made by the Fryingpan-
Arkansas Project. It is a very essential
element of the project and one which must be
constructed and in operation before diversions
are made.

The west slope collection system in the
high mountain tributaries of the Fryingpan and
the Roaring Fork Rivers, located at 10,000 feet,
collect the water which will be brought to a
central point and diverted through the Continen-
tal Divide tunnel to the east slope. That
collection system is located at an elevation of
about 10,000 feet on the west slope of the Rockies.
It will go through the Continental Divide in a
5-3/10's mile tunnel and be discharged into the
headwaters of the Arkansas River. The uppermost
reservoir, Turquoise Lake, formed by Sugar Loaf
Dam, will be enlarged from its present capacity
of 17,000 acre-feet to about 117,000 acre-feet.
Final designs have not been completed on that
structure.

The next reservoir, presently with a capa-
city of about 54,000 acre-feet owned by the Twin
Lakes Irrigation Company, will be enlarged to
260,000 acre-feet.

I

Then the intervening conveyance of water,
starting with Turquoise Lake down through Twin
