I have already mentioned that one problem as it relates to the
funding level. The USDA appropriation is an annual appropriation.
The Chairman of the Appropriations Committee has said that there will
be $1.7. million per year for 10 years, but that is only a verbal
commitment.

I

Thank you.

MR. KROEGER: Any questions? (No response.) Thank you, . very much.

MR. LONGLEY: . I would like to comment that ,the Soil Conservation
Service has been tremendous working with us on this project.. The
amount of help we have gotten from the local office here and the people
in it and the personnel and 'everything' has just been really very fine.
We enjoyed working with them.

(Whereupon, Mr. Longley's remarks were accompanied by a slide
presentation.) --

I have a few slides here which I~would like 'to show you.

Now, this particular project doesn't have anything to do with Grand
Valley, but it represents the effort of a co~ple of individuals over
here on the North Fork area. These producers came to me about two
years ago and decided that they wanted to put in 80 acres: of ground
mini"';sprinklers, Roberts Irrigation type sprinklers. I have one in
my pocket here that you might pass around. But these little, very
simple, pieces of equipment are designed and set up to cost about six
cents apiece. This whole area was put in. The problem that they had
was- that they had about 120 gallons. a minute for 40 acres., which would
normally irrigate maybe five or six acres. And now they are going to
irrigate'40 acres with that. The other thing was that it was going to
be a massive project. They wanted to go into something big. So it
called for 9,650 on the 80-acre property.. These trees are serviced by
these little sprinklers, one apiece. And the water wasn't enough to go
around all at the same time,: so we had to put in valves in there to
separate this water and put it all around.

Now, there are seven valves on this particular plot, 40-acre plot
here, and it is. sequenced around the seven areas over a l7-hour
period.

I

Now, this is when the trees grow big, and they need 30 gallons.of
water a day.

This shows the reservoir that they have. constructed there in the pipe
line area. All the pipe line is below four feet to keep it out of
the frost line. The laterals to the trees, the small polyethylene

-22-
