AGENCY PAA, PROJECT NUMBER 0662

e

3, Project Description: Conservation of Aauatic Species - Arkansas Darter Habitat Protection. South Platte
Native Species & Colorado River Cutthroat Trout Conservation
Project Coordinator: Tom Nesler

3a, Arkansas Darter (Prioritv #2) - The purpose of this project is to protect identified high-quality habitats
for Arkansas Darter recovery requirements to enable delisting of this species as threatened in Colorado, and
reduce listing potential of this federal candidate species,
Project Tasks/Deliverables and Associated Costs:
3a, Establish long term (>20 years) conservation easements or leases with willing cooperators within the
reaches of Big Sandy Creek, Rush Creek and/or Horse Creek to protect at least 3 populations of Arkansas
darters. Easement proposals focus on land surface controls that protect water quality and the associated
riparian areas, Cost Estimate: $ 100.000.
AGENCYPAA, PROJECT NUMBER 0646

.

3b, South Platte Native Species (Prioritv #4) - The purpose of this project is to create and secure pond and
stream refuge habitat for state-listed and special concern native fish species of the South Platte River basin by
exploiting opportunities from ground water storage water development and voluntary landowner incentives,
The project both supports and leverages activities conducted in accordance with the 1997 Cooperative
Agreement for Platte River Research and Other Cooperative Efforts Relating to Endangered Species
Habitats Along the Central Platte River, Nebraska, among the states of Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and
the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Project Tasks/Deliverables and Associated Costs:
3b, For $165,000 construct a new pumping network at Tamarack SW A, independent of the current system.
Includes three additional wells and pipelines. For $20,000 construction of a slough for minnow habitat, a
stream connecting two ponds, and the extension of an existing stream (all lined with synthetic bentonite
fabric). The design would allow recharge to occur at the peripheries of the ponds, while also providing at
least 15 additional acres of suitable habitat for the native fish species of the South Platte basin; enhancement
and construction of sloughs and stream corridors at Pony Express SW A. For $20,000 pumping costs
(electricity) and for $20,000 equipment, supplies and vehicle mileage. Cost Estimate: 225.000
AGENCY PAA, PROJECT NUMBER 0647

e

3c. Native Cutthroat Trout (Prioritv #5) - The purpose of this project is to enhance Colorado River
cutthroat trout (CRCT) populations in accordance with the Colorado- Wyoming-Utah Conservation
Agreement and Strategy (for Colorado River cutthroat trout), and preclude the need for federal protection
through listing as threatened or endangered of any native cutthroat trout in Colorado, and to ensure the timely
recovery and de-listing of native greenback cutthroat trout
Project Tasks/Deliverables and Associated Costs:
3c, Fabricate, install UV treatment system for native cutthroat trout at Mt Ouray hatchery near Salida. This
system will provide redundant protection against disease organisms including whirling disease by treating the
incoming water with ultraviolet light The intensity of the light, in addition to the filtration, will remove any
threat of the whirling disease pathogen. The system will economically treat up to 450 gallons / minute which
will be suitable for small hatcheries that raise limited numbers of cutthroat trout Presently, there are no plans
for installing the system on large hatcheries. The Mt Ouray Hatchery near Salida is especially well suited
since it is small and concentrates on raising cutthroat trout, including the greenback. Installation will assure
that fish can be raised for stocking that are free of the pathogen that would adversely affect the Division's
ability to produce and re-introduce 500,000 inches of native cutthroats per year. Cost Estimate: $ 300.000.
AGENCY P AA, PROJECT NUMBER 0644

Costs for all tasks related to this project (3) shall not exceed $ 625.000 from the Native Species
Conservation Trust Fund, and costs for all tasks related to all projects (1 through 3) shall not
exceed $ 1,100,000 from the Native Species Conservation Trust Fund.
