<br />1398 <br /> <br />we now offer a.Master of Forestry degree <br />and a Master of Science degree with a major <br />in Watershed Management. We hope to be <br />equipped within the next year to offer a <br />Doctor's degree in Watershed Management and <br />we have had numerous inquiries from potential <br />graduate studen~s at the doctorate level. <br /> <br />In further recognition of the need for <br />more adequate training and again at the grad- <br />uate level, the Rocky Mountain Forest and Range <br />'Experiment~ Station, through the headquarters <br />of the Forest Service, Forest Serv~ce Research <br />recently approved the appointment of a research <br />specialist to cooperate with us; Mr. Bert Good- <br />ell, whom many of you know, has been assigned <br />to this post. In addition to carrying on in- <br />dependent research for the Forest Service, his <br />duties will consist of giving guidance and <br />assistance to our graduate students in the con- <br />duct of their research for a Master's thesis or <br />for doctoral dissertation type of research. <br /> <br />Professional course work in Watershed <br />Management includes first a course in what we <br />call, or term the principles of watershed <br />management. There the students will get. an ex- <br />posure to the fundamentals of forest influences, <br />how the fDres't influences water in its various <br />forms and an elementary introduction, really, <br />to hydrology. Their real courses in hydrology <br />they get in their senior year from the Depart- <br />ment of Civil Engineering, in the Engineering <br />School. <br /> <br />We'll have a follow up of this with a <br />course which carries the title 'Watershed <br />Management' in which we will spend as much time <br />as we can in the field visiting the experimental <br />forests at Fraser and at Manitou, the work of <br />the regional office of the Forest Service at <br />Trout Creek, the work of the Agricultural <br />Research Service and the Soil Conservation <br />Service, trying to give some practical aspects <br />to the program as well as the basic or funda- <br />mental work. <br /> <br />We also will give a course in Watershed <br />Programs Administration and Policy where we <br />will review the various responsibilities as far <br />as water resources are concerned with Federal, <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />1 <br />
