In closing, in terms of facilities
and staff, we are rated nationally among
one of the best and these facilities are
available to the people of Colorado if
Colorado wants them to work for Colorado
and( of course, associated with that, we
wil.1 do everytning that we can to assist I
you as leaders in Colorado's water resource
problems, to make it possible for us to help
you.

MR. DILS:

Mr. Dils would you like to cover your
aspect and then after that we will break up,
I believe, so that you may make the tour.a

"Por a few of you at any rate this will
be a little bit of repetition. We talked
yesterday to the Water Congress and Presi-
dent Morgan indicated some of the activities
of a new Watershed Management Unit to the
Board at the luncheon today.

Forestry has today become a many-faceted
field. No longer is the forester essentially
a timber producer. He is, in reality, a re-
source manager. His charge is the husbandry
of all the resources of our.wild.land which
includes wildlife, range, recreation and water
as well as the timber resource.

The infant among these many phases of re-
source management, at least in terms of profes-
sional training, is that of water or water-
shed management. Already in many areas, and
particularly in the west, the importance of
the water resource far over shadows that of
the other resources of the wild lands. Al-
though a course in Forest Influences was first
offered in 1932, our schools have been slow
in responding to the need for specialized train-
ing. It is just within the last ten to twelve
years that many of the shcools have introduced
professional work in watershed management.
Colorado State University was among the first
of these in offering such course work and it 1
started in 1947 here under the direction of
Dr. H. G. Wilm, and I consider myself extreme-
ly fortunate to have been in that first class. ,
