13l:J;j

I

officials of the State as a whole. We
want to expand this program into water
purification and related areas.
,

Naval Hydrodynamics. Our interest
here is uncovering information of direct
benefit to our national defense efforts on
submarines hydrofoil seaplanes and large
ships, particularly aircraft carriers_.arld
particularly, in fields associated with
warfare making use of missiles and in the mine
counter measures field. Prom there on it's
largely of a classified nature. The reason
this is of value to Colorado is as follows:
(l) Up until recently we were quite impregnable
to having our facilities destroyed by the enemy
compared to the other two facilities, one on
the West Coast and one on the East Coast. We
still feel to a certain extent, we have this
favorable location; and (2) boating is becoming
an ever: -, increasingly important recreation in
Colorado and the scientific information we are
uncovering in this defense oriented program is
certainly directly supporting the boating in-
dustry as it will develop in this State. I
won't go into a long winded story on how this
all works in.

I

Support of the program. The magnitude of
the program has doubled in the last three years.
Now let me explain to you how it has doubled.
Our sources of support three years ago was dis-
tributed as follows: we received around $17,000
from the State of Colorado - state monies. We
received $14,000 from Federal sources through
the experiment station. We received at that
time under our CSURP or contract research pro-
gram, $110,000. This year we received $19,000
from the SLate as compared to $17,000 three
years ago" $16,000 from Federal as compared to
$14,000 tnree years ago but our contract and
qrantresearch has jumped from $110,000 to
$320,000. All right, how was this distributed?
In general it means Lhat our research program
in civil engineering is supported 5% from the
State of Colorado, approximately 5% from Fed-
eral support through the Station, and 90% on
contracts and grants. You could expect,in
general, that this same distribution would
apply in terms of total money that would go
into the programl to the one that we presented
to you this morn ng, as to this total program.
