DRY CREEK

Station 1 - June 16. 1992

The community was dominated by organic enrichment tolerant taxa. There were indications of some
sedimentation at this station. Organic enrichment tolerant simuliids numbered 1110S/square meter. High
numbers of simuliids are often found where the watershed has experienced high organic nutrient loading,
which is often associated with overgrazing impacts. Cleanwater taxa included just one cleanwater mayfly,
Epeorus, which was present in less than resident population numbers.

With a stream gradient of 1.9, this stream reach should have good maintenance capability. The DA T
at this station was 3.4, which indicates poor diversity.

Compared to early summer data from 1991 at Station 1, conditions in 1992 were somewhat better,
as indicated by all of the analysis elements; see analysis data table.

The potential for a fishery at this station appeared to be fair. The macro invertebrate biomass of 1.3
g/m' could provide nutrients for a fairly good fishery. However, the scarcity of c1eanwater species
indicated limited spawning substrate in this stream reach.

The BCl of 80 indicated that this stream reach was in good condition but could be better. It
appeared that there may be opportunities for management to improve water quality, riparian habitat
quality, and instream habitat quality in this aquatic ecosystem.

Station I - Au~st 13. 1992

There were indications of some sedimentation at this station. Sediment tolerant indicator taxa present
per square meter were Tricoryrhodes minurus (405), Bezzia (75), and Oligochaeta Tubificidae (S3).
Tricorythodes had a strong resident population. This mayfly competes best where there is a sandy
substrate. Cleanwater taxa included just one stonefly with extremely low numbers.

The observed number of shredders in the community is generally found where the riparian habitat
is in poor condition or where instream habitat conditions are not suitable for these species. With a stream
gradient of 1.9, this stream reach should have good maintenance capability. The DA T at this station was
11.2, which indicates fairly good diversity.

25

.11 ij 2-
