anether field, er whatever management practice er censervatien practice
that he needs, we can tell him what the effect will be.

Basically, the effect we're trying to. measure is the reductien ef salt
to the Colorado. River. We also. will tell him what kind ef imprevements
he'll have in irrigation efficiency fer his'farm er what kind of.
efficiency he is getting with water. Also, we bepe to summarize this I
data so. we can have the complete soil less or salt less frem, the valley,
so. we can say if yeu de ,this series ef1and treatment measures, the
teta1 effect of reducing salt in the Ce10rade River or the Gunnisen
River, which is part ef,the Celorado, will be this ameunt.

We had alltherizatien to. start our study in January. We began field
inventories the 20th of June. We expect to have this completed, that is,
we expect to. inventory avproximately three thousand peeple, by June 1977.
By September of 1977, we re heping to have plans developed, and a repert
cempleted by January ef 1978.

What really do we expect to. get from this, and I'm speaking now for the
Seil Censervatien Service, what we hepe to. attain from this work is mere
conservatien treatment en the land. To get more conservatien treatment
on the land, we hope to. have a study that says this ameunt is needed;
it's going to. cest thi~ amount of dellars. Therefore, we can present
this to the Congress and say yeu.need to accelerate censervatien practices
~n the lewer Gunnisen area by this amount of. dollars; it's going to. cest
this much; we can de it in this amount ef years. As a benefit, this will
make a geed resource data base fer anybody that's ~nterested in it. We
hope tocoerdinate this with all the other interested agencies.

Mr. Chairman, that's a quick sUIIllllary of what we've been deing, and I
weuld be happy to entertain any questions.

MR. STAPLETON: Any questiens from the members of the board?
MR. SPARKS: Do you think you're being adequately funded fer this task?
MR. THORNTON: Yes sir.
MR. STAPLETON: That's the first answer we've getten like that.

MR. SPARKS: Mr. Chairman, we're delighted with the ceoperatien we're
getting from the Soil Censervatien Service. As yeu know, we are under
the gun to comply with the salinity control standards adepted by the
Envirenmental pretectien Agency. These standards have the pessibility of
severely limiting the use ef Ce10rado's water reseurces. This is
anether thing that we're suspicious about, because we c~nnet comply with
the present standards and stitl use additional water in Colerade, with-
out reducing salinity in some manner. '

As the beard, knows , we've moved two of eur engiJ;leers from eur Denver
effice to Grand Junctien to. assist in this impertant undertaking. We
have been receiving censiderable assistance from the Bureau ef Recla-
mation in this field. The Agricultural Reseerch Service, "Colerade State

I

-36-
