CWCB/DWRlUSGS - Stream Gaging and Monitoring
A Authorization: FY 2001
wWaterSource: N/A
Location: Statewide

Grant Amount: $50,000
Project Type: Data plan & acquisition
Project Manager: Jeff Baessler

New stream gages, improvements to existing stream gages sttch as the addition of satellite telemetry equipment, as well
as other hydrologic and climatologic instrumentation that will provide the Board with raw water resources data. This is a
statewide effort to obtain and maintain water resources data that is used by the state and many other entities for the
purpose of water supply planning, development, protection, and monitoring. With recent cuts in federal programs that
have historically supplied much of this data, there is a critical need to continue to not only maintain data collection at
existing sites, but to expand the program into other streams and watersheds. The state's Decision Support Systems,
which have been or are currently being developed, cannot operate adequately without this raw data.
A gaging committee has been formed within the CWCB, which meets each fall to discuss and prioritize areas where
additional resources are essential to maintain and develop accurate water resources data. Specific projects are then
implemented and equipment needs are procured.

Colorado State Universitv - Hollv Area Best Management Practices Demonstration Proiect
Authorization: FY 2001 Grant Amount: $10,000
Water Source: Arkansas River Project Type: Water Mngment Study
Location: Lower Arkansas River Valley near Holly Project Manager: Steve Miller

This $10,000 grant is the final installment on a $100,000 demonstration project funded from the severance tax trust fund.
The $10,000 will be ttsed to prepare and distribute a final report documenting the findings and success of the project.
The details of this final contract are still being negotiated.
Runoff from certain agricttltural areas in the lower Arkansas River valley has a high salt concentration that contributes to
Athe salinity of the Arkansas River at the state line. This project is designed to encourage irrigators to effectively manage
Wwater use to improve crop yields and water quality, to demonstrate the economic benefits of using more effective
irrigation management practices using improved technology such as crop planting patterns and rotation, surge irrigation,
and Best Management Practices. Results will be documented to show increased crop yields and more efficient use of
irrigation water through improved application methods and rehabilitation of existing drainage works.

CWCB - Statewide DrainagelFloodplain Management Criteria Manual
Authorization: FY 200 I Grant Amount: $150,000
Water Source: N/A Project Type: Flood Control
Location: Statewide Project Manager: Tom Browning

To aid in the effort to minimize flood loss vulnerability and related economic impacts we are planning to prepare a
Statewide DrainagelFloodplain Management Criteria Manual. The manual will help flood managers statewide to map and
designate flood hazard areas, determine streams susceptible to severe erosion and bank instability, identify flood
mitigation measures, prepare floodplain management plans, and assist local communities to establish consistent
guidelines and criteria regarding flood related engineering standards.

CWCB - Internet Flood Page and Flood Task Force
Attthorization: FY 2001
Water Source: N/A
Location: Statewide

Grant Amount: $10,000
Project Type: Flood Control
Project Manager: Carolyn Fritz

The Flood Task Force is made up of 15 federal, state and private sector meteorology and hydrology experts who
~ontribute to an annual Colorado Flood Outlook. A monthly Flood Outlook Report and daily flood data are posted on the
~ WCB web page. The snowmelt runoff data and flood outlooks assist water users and others to prepare for floods, aid
management planning, and aid stream diversion operations to reduce flood losses.
