Simpson, State Engineer I-I...e C::..

,j~'-

Subject:

Written Directors' Report for July 25, 2006 Meeting

.

I am submitting a brief written report for the above Board meeting in Durango, Due to
the mechanical problem with the state plane, I could not get to Durango economically
and driving on Sunday due to moving my mother-in-law into assisted living was not
feasible.

General Issues:

1. I am pleased to announce that I appointed Ms. Erin Light, P.E. as the Division
Engineer in Division 6 lSteamboat Springs office). Erin is the first female
Division Engineer in Colorado and has worked hard under Bob Plaska to learn
the duties of the position,

2. The Republican River Basin CREP signup was June 12 and about 25.000
acres were signed up and more are expected as knowledge of the program
becomes available due to booths at the various county fairs this summer. Our
goal is to permanently retire 30,000 acres of irrigated lands in close proximity
to streams in the basin,

.

3. Colorado hosted the Western States Water Council's lWSWC) 15151 meeting in
Breckenridge last week lJuly 19 to 21). This was my last meeting as the Chair
of the WSWC over the last two years and we enjoyed hosting our counter-parts
from 16 other western states for the meeting and a field trip of the Colorado-Big
Thompson project as well mine discharge cleanup at the Burlington-Wellington
mine and discussion of Dillon Reservoir operations, Alan Berryman and Brian
Werner from NCWCD did a great job of facilitating the tour.
