G
~06

The Fish and Wildlife Service is at present
developing a migratory waterfowl refuge just south of
Monte Vista. Plans call for the aquisition of up to
15,000 acres in this project with some 3,500 acres of
crop and pasture land and 2,500 acres of ponds. The
report states that, preliminary. estimates indicate a
minimum annual water requirement of 18,000 acre-feet
fo~ this development. Some water rights will be
acquired with the purchase of ,lands. However, the
report suggests that to develop the refuge .to optimum
capacity, more water will be needed, and consideration
be given to supplying 8,000 acre-feet per year from the
Rio Grande Division project sources, i.e.,Wagon Wheel
Gap Reservoir.

I

No mention is made in the report of how much
increased consumptive use will result in the development
of 2,500 acres of ponds in this area.

I
