clljI

~

.

Proiect to drill. core. and analyze a 2000' well in Kiowa. CO

A proposal to the Colorado Warer Conservation Board
January 28, 1998

. Project headed by the Denver Museum of Natural History (DMNH)
Project co-leaders: Kirk Johnson (Curator of Paleontology)
Bob Raynolds (Research Associate)

. Primary collaborator: Division of Water Resources, U.S. Geological Survey
Project co-leader: Stan Robson (Hydrologist)

. Additional collaborators include: Colorado State University, University of Colorado at
Boulder, Elbert County Commissioners, New Mexico Tech, Scripps Institution of
Oceanography, and the Lunar and Planetary Institute.

Goals:
. Drill and core 2000' well in Kiowa, Elbert County, Colorado
. Geological, paleontological, and hydrological analysis of core
. Advance understanding of Denver Basin aquifers
. Provide publicly accessible core for further analysis
. Create a producing water well for Elbert County Fairgrounds

Timeline:
. Three year project, commence drilling in early 1999

.

Significance:
. Stan Robson of the USGS has indicated that this core "will provide perhaps the single
most important measure of the hydrologic characteristics of the aquifers ever made
in the (Denver) Basin"

Why CWCB should support this project?
. It will enhance quality and accessibility of water resource information
. It will help to assure that Colorado Citizens have ready access to high-quality ground
water information
. It will provide information that helps to quantify and manage subsurface water resources

Budget: $470,672

Sources of revenue:
National Science Foundation*
Colorado Water Conservation Board
Denver Museum of Natural History
Elbert County Commissioners
Colorado State University
USGS Division of Water Resources
Current Shortfall**
Total Project

Scenario A
$221,096
$90,000
$73,576
$10,000
$10,000
$4,000
$62.000
$470,672

Scenario B
$221,096
$120,000
$73,576
$10,000
$10,000
$4,000
$32.000
$470,672

.

* Proposal currently under review.
** Current shortfall to be raised by contributions from the State Engineer's Office, the
Colorado Geological Survey, US Geological Survey, Douglas County Water Resource
Authority, and other water providers dependent on the Denver Basin Aquifers.
