I

the Upper South Platte River. The sense of
urgency attached to this study was heightened
by the destructive flood of June 1965, which
resulted, as we all know, in millions of
dollars in damage in the Denver area, and
further downstream along the South Platte
River.

The demand for water-oriented recreation
in the Denver area is accelerating rapidly.
Data from reservoirs, parks, and other scenic
attractions indicate that a facility such as
the Two Forks Dam and Reservoir will attract
large numbers of recreationists and tourists.
Again, as we all know, there is a new national
emphasis upon improving all aspects of the
public environment. This project will accom-
plish much by generating much needed electric
power, improving the water quality of the
South Platte River, enhancing the fishery, and
providing an unparalleled opportunity for a
large metropolitan population to visit a
unique structure. The Two Forks Dam will be
an unusual structure. From it you can see
pike's Peak, the back range, Denver and the
plains.

In describing the plan of development,
I would like to emphasize that many 'problems
remain and many of the project feature details
and the mode of operation have yet to be
worked out. My presentation includes the
best data currently available about the proj-
ect plan. I am sure everyone realizes that
there will be some changes inevitably as the
project is designed and constructed.

I

The principal project features include
Two Forks Dam, reservoir, and powerplant, the
Turkshead Dam and Reservoir, the visitor
center complex which is up on the side of
the hill. There is an extensive road net-
work. In, fact, the public road network con-
tains over 45 miles of improved hard surface
roads, some of which will be 4-lane.
