o~o REPORT OF ~ DIRECTOR Appropriations. The Director was called to appear before the Ap- propriations Committee, 3:00 P. M., February 26, 1957, at which time some questions were asked with regard to the budget as approved by the Water Board. and as presented to the Appropriations Committee. Representative Burch felt that an appropriation should not extend over several years, as was requested in the case of our proposed $150,000 appropriation. He suggest- ed that inasmuch as there was still some $23,000 available from a previous appropriation, that there be appropriated an additional $77,000. and that the time limit be December 31st, 1958, and this was the amount finally passed. In the Budget, there was an item of $18,000 for cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, Surface Water Branch. The Con- troller cut this to $16,000. I protested the cut to the Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, and the $2,000 was restored, making the total of $18,000. The Committee recommended a $50,000 appropriation for cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, Groundwater Branch, and this request was granted. Nearing the end of the Session, an amendment was made to the Long Bill, whereby $25,000 would be appropriated to the Water Board for the purpose of making studies under Section 12 of Senate Bill No. 113, the Ground Water Bill. The amendment was made, but later that same day. this was transferred to the budget of the Natural Resources Depart- ment. On the whole, our requests of the Colorado Water Conservation Board were honored by the Subcommittee on Appro- priations and the Assembly. Travel. The Director visited Washington r~rch 18th to 21st, and during that time, with Vice-Chairman Moses, called on the Colorado Congressional Delegation. met with Assistant Secretary Aanda~l, Commissioner Dexheimer, and Assistant Commissioner Nielsen, and discussed the Rio Grande Division of the San Luis Valley Project, especially the report on Wagon Wheel Gap.
