"" ~ .

.

.

e

· Approval of hydrologic criteria for iIIlplementing BeachlHabitat Building Flows
(BHBF) -- AMWG approved, see BHBF Triggering Criteria Executive Summary
dated December 10, 1997 for details.
· Development of resource criteria for BHBF -- Still under development in the TWG.
· Implementation of a BHBF in the Spring of 1998 .. Dollars made available for
monitoring and research if the BHBF is made. USBR, W AP A, and the Center
cooperated to provide the necessary funds.
· Evaluation of issues for implementing BHBF greater than 45,000 cfs -- An Ad Hoc
committee was formed within the TWG that is chaired by Clayton Palmer.
Clayton is drafting a discussion paper on this matter. Basically W AP A wants
load following capability in exchange for the higher release. The release still
needs to stay within the 8.23 maf annual release and the terms of the Grand
Canyon Protection Act.
· Establishment of a Science Advisory Board -- Tom Moody chairs the Ad Hoc
committee of the TWG established to implement this. The premise is that the
Advisory Board can advise on the science only, not on policy or other issues.
· Development of Management Objectives for the Grand CanyonlGlen Canyon Dam
Operations -- Barry Gold is the chair of this Ad Hoc group. The goal is keep the
management objectives within the framework of the preferred alternative
identified in the EIS.
· Installation of flash boards at Glen Canyon Dam _. Bruce Moore is the lead. See
Jencsok memo dated February 19, 1998 for latest information.
· ESAlNEP A Compliance -- This is a VSBR\USFWS issue. Nothing new to report.
· Studies regarding the design, testing and installation of Glen Canyon Dam
Temperature Control Devices -- Dave Truman is the lead on this issue. He is
developing a paper on the subject for TWG review. No draft yet available.

The AMWG directed the TWG to investigate and evaluate these issues and make appropriate
recommendations to the AMWG at its next meeting in July, 1998.

I will provide you with a brief overview of these issues at the Board Meeting.

GJ/fg/l :wctranslboardmemfJan98/item29c
