.

Double samples were also conducted during the summer of 1995 and 1996.
Approximately 40% of the trail users actually signed the trail register on the
double sample days, which is the figure that will be used when there is no
trail counter. Using trail counter and register info~ation, it is estimated
that October 1, 1995 to September 30, 1996 saw 110,000 visitors to the Hanging
Lake trail.

~e Hanging Lake trail has now been nominated as a demonstration interpretive
fee site. If selected, visitors to the trail will be charged a small user fee,
starting in the spring 1997. This money will be used to improve the
interpretive signing at the lake, will pay for trail maintenance, and will fund
employees to collect fees and enforce regulations. The last is most important
in protecting this fragile area~ as the rise in visits has also resulted in an
increase in infractions. The rules imposed on the area for resource protect1on
include no dogs on the trail or trailway, and no fishing or swimming in the
lake.

.

.

24
