The Colorado Heritage Program is studying the rare ecological character
of East Fork above Spouting Rock for eligibility aa a Research Natural Area.
The White River National Forest is likely to nominate this area of East Fork
above Spouting Rock as a Research Natural Area.

MOre than 80,000 visitors per year hike up the trail to view Dead Horse Creek.
Hanging Lake, and Spouting Rock. Visitor logs recount the depth of enjoyment
felt at all times of year and at all natural ranges of flow. The State built a
parkin51 .u;d rest ar".. at the trail base, and many community groups have h"lped
repair and maintain the Han9in51 Lake trail and boardwalk. This trail is the
most heavily-used trail in. the State. The diatincti ve geologic.. hydrologic,
biotic, and aesthetic qualities of this area justify protection of the full
range of natural flows in all segments for the recreational enjoyment ot the
public.

Sincerely,

f!!L.h.~

Water Program Leader
Rocky Mountain Region

Caring for the Land and Serving People

Printed on RaevrlWf P~no:or ..I"!!...
