I

I

110

9. What is the importance of the Colorado River to
the future of the Southwest?

"The Colorado River drainage system is the heart of the
intermountain Southwest, and is the 'last water hole' available
to future farms and ranches, industries and communities in the
region."

10. Are controversies over the allocation of water

normal?

-r

For years controversies, conferences, and negotiations
have taken place among the various States on the allocation of
the river's water."

11. Should the solution of these controversies be

simple?

"Indeed, nothing is simple in t he Colorado Basin when
examined closely."

12. Is there sufficient data available f or proper
planning of the disposition of water of the Colorado River?

"Probably no larger drainage basin in the country is
as poorly equipped with basic data as is that of the Colorado
River. This lack of data has come to be widely recognized and
great effort has been made to fill the gaps. However, much
information is still lacking.

"Although records of flow have been taken on the
main stem and some of the major tributaries for a considerable
period, the data are not sufficient for full development of
the basin."

13. Do we have adequate data on evaporation for
planning purposes?

"Complete information concerning evaporation rates,
and factors affecting evaporation such as wind direction and
velocities, temperature. and air pressure should be available
prior to the selection of any reservoir in the Colorado River
Basin. And steps to secure this information on a basin-wide
basis should be initiated immediately."

14. Do we have adequate data on ground water for
planning purposes?

"Only a small amount of the needed information on
ground waters is available."
