.

10,000 years ago. There is no physical evidence that the depression storage was ever

overtopped by flood water. It is evident that Sanborn Draw ended at the depression and

there is no evidence of any channel extending from the depression to the river.

Initially an outlet structure was constructed at the reservoir site and minor fill dams were
built sufficient to form Sanborn Draw Reservoir, which held approximately 16,000 acre-feet
of water. It first received water in 1 902. RRLC purchaseq Sanborn Draw Reservoir and
the associated inlet canal called Riverside Ditch. Riverside Irrigation District was formed
at that time to purchase 1,200 of the rights from RRLC. On the strength of the Riverside
Irrigation District contract, the RRLC enlarged Sanborn Draw Reservoir to the present
capacity of approximately 64,000 acre-feet and changed its name to Riverside Reservoir.

PROJECT SERVICE AREA

.

The project site and project service area are shown on Figure 1. Approximately 22,500
acres are served by the Riverside Irrigation District, and reservoir storage water is delivered
for supplemental irrigation supplies to about 25,000 acres of additional land located outside
the District.

NEED FOR THE PROJECT
. The RRLC is undertaking this project to enhance the safety of Riverside Dam and Reservoir
by providing an emergency spillway to allow the safe routing of the inflow design flood
without the overtopping of the dam embankment. The inflow design flood is that flood
produced by the 75% probable maximum precipitation.

Approximately 3,100 acres of the Riverside Reservoir and adjacent land is located on
Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land. The BLM has offered to sell this property to
RRLC. In order to maintain control of the reservoir and its facilities without possible future
interference from the federal government, RRLC desires to obtain this land from the BLM
as a part of this project.

.

Riverside Dam and Reservoir has been classified by the Colorado Division of Water Reso ~
urces (DWR), Office of the State Engineer, Dam Safety Branch as a Large size, C1'lSS 1

5
