.

::!

i.
..
"
""-d

Metropolitan Water Supply Investigation

Executive Summary

111e ~On6- ~~;:~n ,..;.'~er ~el.:.~'::~':.3 for fris sub-region are projected to be ab,:mt 100,000 ac:e-
feet per year, Most of the sub-region's projected increase in water demand is associated
with anticipated growth in Arvada and Broomfield, Providers in this sub-region have
plans in place to meet about 90,000 acre-feet of this need. Cooperative planning efforts
for meeting the remaining 10,000 acre-feet of need in this sub-region are focused upon
coordinated use and sharing of existing or new storage and conveyance facilities and
expanded reuse.

Within each of these sub-regions, cooperative water supply approaches could play an
important role in meeting future water supply needs in a manner that could potentially
reduce the costs and environmental permitting risks associated with other options.

The MWSI has significantly improved communication and cooperation between metro
Denver area water providers, It has resulted in collaborative studies and planning through
the sub-regional studies that are currently underway, The MWSI has also resulted in the
development of a comprehensive regional database for water supply systems, their
interrelationships, and their ongoing planning strategies and efforts. There is a
continuing need for basin-wide and statewide cooperative efforts, There is a also a
continuing need for State involvement to facilitate discussions, provide technical and
financial support, help maintain parity between large and small water providers and other
interest groups and to provide a forum for addressing State policy issues.

Xli

Prepared for the Colorado Water Conservation Board, Colorado Department of Natural Resoura:s by
Hydrosphere Resource Consultants, 1002 Walnut Street, Suite 200, Boulder, CO 80302
