different parties, state and local interests, to try to elicit some
support or reaction to this particular concept. These were not plans
at all. We had some engineering studies, economic studies, on those
particular concepts. But we did not have what you would call a plan
ready to go to Congress.

Now, based upon. the reaction we have, had from that, we, haven't had any
widespread support to continue those types of investigations. .We have
had some interest from the Cache La Poudre area, interested in one of
~ the-features that is described inhere"th~reeri)Mountain Reservoir
upstream from Fort Collins. And we have had consultation with the,
interests in the area and with the Conservation Board staff.

One thing that did come out of this study, however, was interest from
the Coal Creek area. We put out this information fact sheet which
described the Coal Creek area, which is a very small area, about 15
square miles., It is a tributary of Boulder Creek. It has the com-
munities of Louisville, Lafayette, Superior and Erie. They were very
concerned that ,we , were more or less suspending our investigation at a
time when. they were in dire need of an additional water supply.

So in October of 1976, that period, we began a concentrated study on
just the 15 square mile area rather than the entire Front Range area.

I would like to introduce at this time Lon Knapp, who is coordinating
those studies at the present time and will be initiating a rather active
public involvement program over the next few months.

One of the critical things that we wanted to examine in the Coal Creek
study was the water supply. Coal Creek, itself runs 3,000' acre-feet
a year, very small, very limited water resource.

The communities in the area are acquiring water rights from
agricultural water users, primarily from South Boulder Creek. So our
first order of business in the Coal Creek investigation was to look
at the acquisition of these water rights and how they might be put
together in.a package., We have completed that study, and we have a
pretty good water supply identified, but we are,now looking at
structural and non-structural ways in which to,utilize that water
resource.

One of the areas that we are involved in and just had the Geological
Survey involved in is looking at ground water supplies which might be
used in conjunction with the surface supplies. There will be.people
in the area looking at the dam sites, potential dam sites and potential
conduits and doing the mapping and survey work and perhaps even some
drilling this year. We feel that the area needs a major ,effort, ,and

-10-

I

I
