Thompson, Holly -- Amity Mutual Irrigation Company <br />Loren Whittemore, Rush -- El Paso County Commissioner <br />"The possibility that Colorado might have to pay Kansas for past depletions and curb <br />future use of water in the basin has added some urgency to resolving other water issues along <br />the Arkansas River," Romer said. "We are going to have to make some tough decisions, and <br />I want to make sure that all the stakeholders are working together to make sure that those <br />decisions are good ones. " <br />The Arkansas River Coordinating Committee brings together representatives of water <br />conservancy districts, ditch companies, ground water users, counties, municipal water utility <br />agencies and other stakeholders in the Arkansas River Basin. The committee will be co- <br />chaired by State Engineer Hal Simpson and Water Conservation Board Director Chuck Lile. <br />James S. Lochhead, Executive Director of the Department of Natural Resources, Perry <br />Olson, Director of the Division of Wildlife, and Laurie Mathews, Director of State Parks, <br />will serve as ex-officio members. <br />The state has been actively working with water users and others on a number of <br />issues in the basin. Two years ago, the state began the Fort Lyon Canal Study to help <br />communities in Southeastern Colorado find ways to survive under mounting economic <br />pressures on farmers to sell their water rights to Front Range municipalities. The Lower <br />Arkansas River Commission developed recommendations for enhancing wildlife habitat and <br />the recreational potential at the John Martin and Great Plains Reservoirs.
