"

DRAFT

Chapter 2:

Perceptions of Drought and Drought Impacts, Colorado Case Studies

Authors:

Sasha Charney, Bouvette Consulting; John Wiener, University of
Colorado, Boulder

Drought cycles present a real and critical influence on life in Colorado. Although drought
does not have the immediate impact of other extreme weather conditions such as those
associated with, for example, flooding, it nonetheless influences individual experiences.
These experiences span many areas including business and personal security, freedom
and overall quality of life issues as everyone in the State depends on a reliable water
supply for sustaining business and for personal uses. To capture and relate an
understanding of the impact of drought on individual perspectives, several people whose
work and lives are influenced by water availability have been interviewed. The primary
focus of the interviews will be to determine how drought has changed their view of living
in Colorado and across what period of time the impacts of drought are felt. Results will
be presented in this chapter both as individual case studies and as overarching themes that
emerge.

5/1612003

Page 4
