<br />Sample Computations For Recommended RICD Flow Rate Ranae <br /> <br />Based on the information provided in the "Summary Of Selected Technical <br />Requirements For Artificial Whitewater Cours~s", the CWCB has based, in part, its <br />recommendation for destination-oriented RICDjflow rates on the following: <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />Lower end flow rate* = 0.5 feet x 16.5 Net x 6.6 feet/second = 54 cfs <br /> <br />Upper end flow rate* = 3.0 feet x 16.5 feet x 6.6 feet/second = 326 cfs <br /> <br />*Flow rates computed using continuity eq'uation, Q=AV, where; <br />Q = stream discharge in cubic feet per s~cond. <br />A = cross-sectional area of stream in squ~re feet (depth x width in this case). <br />V = average streamflow velocity in feet per second. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />tit <br /> <br />The computed low and high-end flow rates of 5i4 cfs and 326 cfs, respectively, support <br />the CWCB's recommended RICD flow range of $0 cfs to 350 cfs for destination- <br />oriented boating courses. The upper end flow ~ate (326 cfs) accounts for the depth <br />required to perform a safe Eskimo roll at a giv~n stream section assuming a reasonable <br />width for recreational kayaking activities (A 16i.5 foot width was used here as the a <br />recommended width for a 2 person canoe to safely turn sideways). The lower end flow . <br />rate (54 cfs) accounts for the depth to float a boat at a given stream section assuming <br />a width necessary to allow a two person canoe to turn sideways. <br /> <br />The CWCB is aware that the above computatio~s are based on slalom course <br />recommendations that were published in 1989. !Unfortunately, there does not seem to <br />I <br />be a published or accepted source of more currient information for design criteria <br />related to rodeo or play boating courses, and therefore the CWCB has attempted to <br />develop guidelines using a variety of sources as, stated in the main body of this <br />document. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />8 <br />
