Chatfield Letter <br /> <br />Federal and Interstate <br /> <br />WSWC Water Supply Meeting: On Sept. 28-29 I attended the Western States Water Council <br />(WSWC) and Western Governors' Association (WGA) workshop to address the question: "How Do <br />Western States Plan To Meet Future Water Supply Challenges?" <br /> <br />Water officials from 17 states and eight federal agencies participated. Following presentations from <br />each of the 17 western states, two separate panels of federal officials discussed the role of their <br />agencies in meeting western water supply needs. The meeting also included a panel on the potential for <br />greater climate variability in the future, and what that might mean for water managers. Copies of the <br />PowerPoint presentations have been posted at: www.westgov.org/wswclmeetings.html. <br /> <br />Utah Governor Olene Walker set the tone for the meeting by describing that the extended drought has <br />left some reservoirs "absolutely empty." She said water is now a commodity to be taken seriously. <br />Utah has set a goal of reducing per capita water use by 25 percent by 2050. She also stressed the need . <br />for public education and understanding about water issues. <br /> <br />2 <br />
