"I am Bob Longenbaugh from Colorado state
University. I know if Mort was here - Mort
Bittinger who has been before this Board quite
a bit before - he might like to throw out a
few things here. I am not in disagreement
at all with what Larry has presented or what
John has presented. We work very closely
with the U.S.G.S. on this.

There is just one more thing that I'd
like to point out here that I think is very
important and I might ask just one question
of John on this, and that is this phreatophyte
use. I'd like to take an example of the La
Junta to Las Animas reach. That was one that
we did a fairly thorough phreatophyte study on
in the year 1962, wasn't it John?"

"Yes, right."

"Total acreage, if I am not mistaken, was
around 4,000 acres of phreatophytes in that
reach?"

"The area of phreatophytes was about
10,000, Bob. The total area was 33,000 acres."

"Well, I used an actual phreatophyte with-
in the river area made up of cottonwoods and
salt cedar in that area, and it seems to me
like it was between 4,000 and 5,000 acres of
land covered by this material in this reach
between La Junta and Las Animas.

There is one point that I'd like to put I
out here that is real perplexing and it is
going to be very perplexing to the Ground
Water Section of the U.S.G.S. or anybody else
to evaluate this. It is what the consumption
is by phreatophytes or by crops. And the
point I want to put out here is, if we assume,
and I think this is what John has come up
