The spill occurred between 8 a.m. and t t a.m. Friday when debris
plugged an in-plant sewer line at the Littleton/Englewood Wastewater Treatment Plant. Approximately
12,000 gallons of spilled material, consisting primarily of return flows from various treatment processes,
reached the South Platte River. Because the spilled material was not raw sewage, it is expected to pose a
much lower health risk than would have been posed by a sewage spill.

Littleton/Englewood officials notified the Department of Public Health and Environment's Water Quality
Control Division of the spill. In turn, the Denver Environmental Health Department; Tri-County Health
Department, which serves Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties; and downstream water users and
communities were being notified ofthe spill and ofthe potential contamination.

Steve Gunderson, the director ofthe Department of Public Health and Environment's Water Quality
Control Division, said that, as a result of the spill, water samples are now being taken at several locations
along the South Platte River to determine the level of contamination.

Gunderson said that when the test results from those samples become available, it will he determined
what additional steps need to be taken and when the warning about contact with South Platte River can be
lifted.

Nortbern Colorado Water Conservancy District Meetings: second Friday of every month, held at the
Loveland office for more infonnation visit www.ncwcd.org

Rio Grande BasIn

Construction Begins on MInnow Sanctuary: The firnt phase of construction began Feb. 20 on a
protected off-channel sanctuary for the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow. The Bureau of
Reclamation, Fish and Wildlife Service, City of Albuquerque and Middle Rio Grande Conservancy
District are working together on the project in southwest Albuquerque. The idea for the sanctuary was
brought to the group by Senator Pete Domenici as all parties looked for ways to sustain the habitat for the
silvery minnow. Albuquerque-based MAC Enterprises Inc. has been contracted to construct the first
phase, which includes part of the pump station and concrete work.

27
