Detailed floodplain information means . floodplain information prepared using
topographic base maps, hydrologic analyses, and hydraulic calculations to arrive at
precise water surface profiles and floodlllain: delineations suitable for making land use .
decisions under statutorily authorized zoning powers.
Approximate floodplain information mean~ floodplain information llrepared using a
significantly reduced level of detail to arrive at a hazard delineation without water surface
profiles.

Types of Information that are Designated and Approved by the Board
CWCB staff performs technical reviews on the follo~ing types of reports and maps for approval
and designation by the Board: .

1) "Flood Insurance Study" (FIS), which is produced by the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) and used for floodplain management, regulation, and insurance purposes.
2) "Flood Insurance Rate Map" (FIRM), which is produced by FEMA and used for floodplain
management, regulation, and insurance purposes. A FIRM may be published with or without
an associated hydrologic and hydraulic report,
3) "Flood Hazard Boundary Map" (FHBM), which ~as produced by the Federal Insurance
Administration and are used for floodplain management, regulation, and insurance purposes.
An FHBM usually depicts approximate floodplain boundaries only, and does not have an
accompanying report. Note: For all FHBM designations, the CWCB staffwiIl perform (in-
house or by contract with a consultant) hydrOlogic analyses. '
4) "Floodplain Information Reports", which are produced by local governments, state and
federal agencies, special districts, or the private sector, and are used for floodplain
management purposes and usually adopted by FEMA for use in Flood Insurance Rate Map
revisions.
5) Various hydrology studies and related floodplain :studies (community-wide or site specific)
that depict 100-year floodplain information that is useful for floodplain management
purposes.

.

Two additional terms are:
. "Floodplain Information" is a generic term used ~o describe any of the above types of reports
and/or maps in the CWCB's "rules and regulatiobs..."
. "Floodplain Resolution" is a formal document pr~pared by CWCB staff describing the
Floodplain Information that is to be designated ~d approved by the Board.

Tasks in the Designation Review Process
The review process for ensuring that floodplain information reports meet the CWCB's technical
requirements is described in the "Rules and Reguljitions for the Designation and Approval of
Floodplains and of Storm or Floodwater Runoff C4annels in Colorado." The technical review
process generally consists of the following tasks;

.

i
Flood Protection. Water Project Planning and Fim}ncing . Stream and Lake Protection
Water Supply Protection . Co~servation Planning

2
